Dewormed lambs today and got group shots of sale sheep.   We have over a dozen adult ewes for sale, 17 ewe lambs (some breedstock/show quality, some pet/fiber quality), and a few select ram lambs.  There is also a black yearling ram for sale as well - Vementry, and possibly a 2 year old ram.  We also have 13 crossbred ewe lambs for sale too.

We kept back a few select ram lambs for sale.  The rest were culled to market.  We only sell rams that are good enough to represent the breed standard and to show!  A couple of other ones that are available were previously posted a week or two ago.  Ram lambs range from $300-350.

2013 Shetland Sales List

Yeah, it's been awhile.  I've been taking my time to figure out who is for sale.  This year, it is actually easier to figure out who the ewes are that are available than the rams.  I only want to keep relatively few ewe lambs this year - compared to previous years.  So, it is a ewe buyer year.   I've also tried to make viewing pictures a bit easier - both for you and me.  I made picture collages of the different age groups.  It has made a tremendous difference when comparing.  This way you don't have to scroll through 50 pictures to find one, just go to each group's collage.  Unfortunately, all of the for sale sheep are not on the collages, for various reasons.  Mainly, it is hard to remember who to get a picture of, finding that particular sheep (out of nearly 200), getting a good angle, AND having the camera!  Some either want to hide or be underfoot.  Neither offers a good photo op.  I'll try to update them . . . if I can.

The ram lambs are either horned or scurred.  I'll make a notation of each.  Medium to high UK/Shetland Island genetics.  The fleeces on the lambs are good to great single coated type so I won't repeat this for each one.  This means most will be grade 2 type as adults (AFD between 25-30, SD 4-6.5, CV 24% or lower, SF lower than the AFD).  In other words, breed standard Shetland wool with a typy frame and looks.   I'll just make a notation if one is more different than the rest. Not that they are cookie cutter sheep by any means!!  But it is hard to make complete descriptions telling variations such as who has a teeny tiny fluke tail, who has a very boxy/square body vs. a longer body/leg, etc.  Pictures are much easier and faster!  The size of the lamb will be listed and the horn size as well.

I'll list the mother of the lambs under the sires.   All ewes are listed in the order of the birth of the lambs and are UnderTheSon prefix, unless noted.  Lambs are born in March with the exception of Shalimar's, which are born in April, and Ellie's ram, which was born in May (and won't be available anyway until Aug).  Therefore, all lambs are ready to be weaned and off to their new homes!

Start of 2013 Sales Listings

Yes, it has been awhile since I've last posted.  It is crazy busy around here.  I'm hand shearing the flock . . . and only half done.  The rain (and MUD!) has put a literal damper on progress. But, to be reasonable, the sheep are rooing rather late for some of them.  A couple that I've put on the stand, I've only rooed/sheared the neck and britch, put their coat back on, and sent them on their way.  They just weren't 'ready' yet.  At least all of the boys are now shorn.  The big rams I have to do tied to the fence and not on the stand.  It is hard enough getting some of the big ewes on the stand by myself!

Very wide stance.  Lives with horned rams!  Milky dam.  Second in his class last fall at WSWF.

I've also got Cleggan still available and Coburg.  All of these rams, with the exception of Coburg, will be shipped to market, possibly next month.  I'm reducing the ram flock by approximately half as I'll be looking to keep some of the upcoming ram lambs.

There will probably be more adults added to the list next month.  I'm waffling on letting a few go.  I really don't feel that bad about it either because I just read on someone's facebook page that every sheep they let go has claw marks on them (because they don't want to let them go!).  I feel about the same way . . .

For lambs, there are MANY that are available.  I just haven't had time to get pictures - and seeing that there has been so much MUD, I really haven't wanted to get pictures of them anyway!  But, to give you a feel for what is available, we'll have several spotted ram lambs, and both rams and ewes in kats, blacks, whites, and moorits.  For the ram lambs, we have some with big horns, and some that are going to be half pollled.   A couple will be full polls.   Fleeces and conformations are wonderful.  I'll be taking pictures NEXT month (after the wedding!!).  There just isn't time this month!

Background is his fleece - intense coal black, very dense, very crimpy.  

I've really liked this ram from when he was very young.   He and Stronsay are very similar in type, though they have somewhat different bloodlines.  Ben's neck is a bit longer than Stronsay's and Stronsay's rear is a tad wider.  This is the only ram I keep by 'Black'.  I didn't use Ben last fall as he was leased out.  Getting intense blacks (and hopefully dark moorits) will be one goal for using him, as well as breeding him to the kats to hopefully get some more grey kats.  Everyone keeps panicking about getting too many grey kats . . . but what is the problem with that???  I love grey kats!  The fleeces are wonderful!
